Interpreting Doggy Body Language
At Sniff and Wiggles in Petaluma, we believe every bark, bounce, and tail wag tells a story. Dogs may not speak our language, but they are master communicators if you know what to look for. Whether your pup is a tail-wagging socialite or a shy sniffer, understanding canine body language helps us keep every visit safe, fun, and full of wag-worthy joy!
Tail Talk
A wagging tail does not always mean a happy dog. The position, speed, and direction of the wag matter.
- Loose, side-to-side wag = friendly and relaxed.
- High, stiff wag = alert or possibly agitated.
- Low, slow wag = nervous or uncertain.
At our doggie daycare, we always observe tail cues to help us gauge comfort and energy levels.
Ears, Eyes, and Everything In Between
- Ears forward = curious or excited.
- Ears pinned back = scared, anxious, or submissive.
- Soft eyes = calm and happy.
- Whale eye (seeing whites of the eye) = stressed or wary.
Sniff and Wiggles staff are trained to spot subtle signs like these to ensure every dog feels seen, safe, and understood.
The Happy Wiggle
The signature Sniff and Wiggles move? The full-body wiggle. It is pure joy on four legs. A wiggling butt, a bouncy gait, and wavy tail all mean your pup is feeling confident and loved. We live for those wiggles!
Why This Matters
When dogs are in a group setting, like our play yards or nap lounges, understanding these cues is critical to their comfort and well-being. Doggy body language helps us:
- Match playmates appropriately
- De-escalate tension before it starts
- Make new dogs feel at home
Let the Wiggles Begin!
We love celebrating each dog’s unique way of communicating. Whether your pup is a playful pupper, a watchful woofer, or a curious cutie, Sniff and Wiggles provides a safe and joyful space where they can truly be themselves.
